It's that time of year where we reflect on the past events of 2018 and look forward to new "adventures" in the coming year. 2018 has not been kind to us, so I for one, can't wait for the new year, and hopefully, a new chapter, to begin.
We finally landed on a treatment plan for this latest bout of the lymphoma, and it is targeted therapy in pill form. I have been on the medication for almost 2 weeks and have noticed a slight improvement in the lesions so am hopeful this is the right course of treatment. Doctors have advised that it may take up to 2 months for a noticeable improvement so must be patient (not my strong suit, I know). If successful, I will be on this medication indefinitely, as long as nothing else "crops" up for awhile.
We're still considering the stem cell transplant using a donor. For donors, they first look at siblings and if not a match, then they look at a universal donor bank. They've asked about my ethnic background which is British and East European so will be looking for a snobby and pretentious, big-boned farmer of robust stock. This search can take several months which is why we have to start looking now, but we would not do the transplant until the lesions are under control.
This past couple of weeks has been difficult for Don and I. On December 7, our awesome neighbour and my "cancer coach" succumbed to his own battle with lymphoma. Then, on December 12, Don's friend and co-worker of 30 years lost his fight with prostate cancer. When we experience such significant losses, it's hard not to consider one's own mortality and the pain that this terrible disease causes.
Xmas is just around the corner and looking forward to spending the holidays with family and friends, and trusting that 2019 will be a kinder year for us. Wishing all of you the very best holiday season and much health and happiness for next year. As ever, thanks so much for your kind words and support.
